Positive Intelligence for Parents and Teens
I lead workshops and keynotes on wellness and positive intelligence. Every single time, I have several parents from the audience who ask me how this can be used with their teens. As a mom of a 12 yo son I have found tremendous value in sharing these concepts with him. I know so well that within this constantly changing society, everyone is experiencing more stress and anxiety. We are looking for safe spaces and our judges - that voice inside our heads that sabotages our best efforts - is gaining traction that takes us farther away from what we want.
In an interview in the Wall Street Journal with Dr. Ethan Kross, experimental psychologist and author of “Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why It Matters, and How To Harness It,” Elizabeth Bernstein writes that “chatter can sabotage us by undermining our ability to think clearly and perform well. It can also interfere with our relationships, because it can lead us to push people we care about away. And it can lead impact our physical health.”
When asked “how much time do we spend in self-talk,” Dr. Kross references a study that indicates “we think to ourselves at a rate equivalent to 4,000 words per-minute out loud. A contemporary State of the Union address is about 6,000 words and can last over an hour. So you are getting the same verbal punch thinking to yourself for about a-minute-and-a-half as you would if you listened to an entire State of the Union address.”
We know that to be in good physical condition, we need to work out. It’s the same for our minds. In order to get in good mental fitness, we need to exercise our brains.
