Practice the Curious Anthropologist Mindset for Greater Wellbeing

How To Have the Perfect Mother’s Day?

Tell them what you want!

Many years ago I received an email with this same headline. It captured my attention and when I opened it, it said, “Tell them what you want."

I laughed. Wouldn’t it be nice if all of the important people in our lives could read our minds but the truth is they can’t always do that. Or the timing is not right. Or, something else. Why wait and wonder if the day will go the way you’d like it to go. The pleasers and the hyper-achievers in your life will be equally disappointed to see the look on your face when they find out they didn’t get you what you wanted.

You can wait around hoping they remember or read your mind or you can tell them what you want.

What are you waiting for? Join me for a day of self-care. Mother’s Day can be with the family. Enjoy yourself in community with others. It’s what you really want! (This event has been rescheduled. Please contact Monica or check back soon. Thank you!)

Put yourself first in this one-day retreat. Connect through mindfulness, breath, yoga flow, chanting, & music. Lunch, beverages, snacks, and a special departure gift included.

Leaders - celebrate your team members with the gift of wellness.

"It was wonderful to escape for the day to a local yoga retreat focused around self-care. Monica designed a day for people to join, learn, share, and eat delicious food -- all at a beautiful location. I felt relaxed, welcomed, and calm during the whole day. Additionally she seamlessly integrated an optional coaching session, mid-day, which made me really think about my future self, and what steps I can take today, to make those dreams a reality. All-in-all, a wonderful day of fellowship, yoga, and focusing on taking care of myself." (Anne-Marie F.)

"Beautiful experience-thoughtfully done from beginning to end. Can't wait for another one!" (Alison)

“I started taking yoga classes with Monica at the beginning of the year. I was brand new to yoga and taking her yoga class leaves me feeling good for the rest of the day. As a teacher she is kind and supportive while guiding students through each pose with cues that are easy to follow. At the end of each class I always feel so great!” (Deirdre)

The Mindset of a Curious Anthropologist

If you want to fly you have to give up the things that are weighing you down. (Toni Morrison)

When you let go of what is no longer serving you, you gain space for more things that bring you joy. You get to say yes to the things that fill you up. You get to say yes to the fountains and no to the drains. You get to invite in wellness in all ways into your life.

My company name, Spark Plug Labs, represents the spark that ignites inspiration and leads people to action. In a car, a spark plug ignites the engine in a container. A lab is a safe space to experiment and develop new ideas. As scientists, we develop a hypothesis and when we gain new information, we change our minds. We adapt what we are doing to gain better outcomes.

The mindset of a curious anthropologist invites us to explore our surroundings and our relationships, at work, at home, or in our communities, without blame or judgment. It is so much easier to go through life this way. I promise! But it’s not easy. We humans are very good at judging and blaming. We carry it around with us and it creeps up when we aren’t feeling our best and then we end up feeling even worse.

Can you practice the curious anthropologist mindset as you go through your day? Notice your surrounding and experiences with people and ask these questions:

  • What do I notice?

  • What is true about this?

  • Without blame or judgement, what are ALL the relevant factors that might be contributing to this situation? (info about you, others, and circumstances)

  • Allow yourself to fully understand what is going on before figuring out what to do.

Letting go of judgment will give you more freedom and power over your mood and behavior. The practice of yoga is to bring calm to the mind, help remove all of the chatter so you can feel good and show up with positivity for others. The movement of yoga (the asana practice) is to help you create space for your breath and gain clarity in your mind.

Be well and reach out if you’d like to learn more, say hi, or ask a question. I hope to see you soon!
