Nuala O’Connor is the President & CEO of the Center for Democracy and Technology. She is an internationally recognized expert in Internet and technology policy. Nuala has experience in both the public and private sectors. She was the Global Privacy Leader at General Electric, where she was responsible for privacy policy and practices. Prior to joining CDT, she worked at as VP of Compliance & Consumer Trust and Associate General Counsel for Data & Privacy Protection. Nuala’s time in the technology sector began at DoubleClick, then as Deputy Director of the Office of Policy & Strategic Planning, Chief Privacy Officer and as the Chief Counsel for Technology at the US Department of Commerce. She became the first statutorily appointed Chief Privacy Officer in federal service when she was named as the first Chief Privacy Officer at the Department of Homeland Security. Learn more at

Jules serves as Executive Director and Co-chair of the Future of Privacy Forum, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank that seeks to advance responsible data practices. FPF is supported by the chief privacy officers of more than 110 leading companies, several foundations, as well as by an advisory board comprised of the country’s leading academics and advocates.

Jules' previous roles have included serving as Chief Privacy Officer at AOL and before that at DoubleClick, as Consumer Affairs Commissioner for New York City, as an elected New York State Legislator and as a congressional staffer, and as an attorney. Jules serves on the Advisory Board of the Center for Copyright Information. In 2001, Crain’s NY Business magazine named him one of the top technology leaders in New York City. Michelle is the Founder of The iDennedy Project, a consulting and advisory company helping to bring privacy and security products to market and to advance small information based companies’ business objectives.  Michelle is also a founder and editor in chief of that was started as the ultimate source for individuals and companies who wish to debate, learn, lead, innovate and drive the concept of Identity in all it’s forms and facets.

Michelle’s experience includes serving as McAfee’s first full-time Vice President and Chief Privacy Officer; as the Vice President for Security & Privacy Solutions for the Oracle Corporation; and as Chief Data Governance Officer within the Cloud Computing division at Sun Microsystems, Inc.

In 2009, she was awarded the Goodwin Procter-IAPP Vanguard award for lifetime achievement and the EWF – CSO  Magazine Woman of Influence award for work in the privacy and security fields. Learn more at
